Followed from my post yesterday that I explained how to sign up with Google Adsense, in this post I will explain in more details how to set up a blog on your own.
I will cover on 5 different points:
The post will be useful for people that want to make money online. You need to keep in mind that nothing is free in this world. Nothing! there’s no free meal. This is the principal. If you want to do business online, you need to invest. We are lucky enough, blogging business doesn’t require much budget. It will require more your time and efforts. I will help to show you post by post so that finally you would need only 2 hours per day for blogging.
You can work more if you want, but there’s two points:
1. There’s a lot of information in making money online. The information will be overload for you to read and understand. You can pass your 24 hours to read those tutorials online, there’s no end. There’s a lot of information and we don’t know which one is true, which one is cheating. I read many time advertising banners that showing we could earn 1,000 USD in one day or bla bla … just remember some people can earn money by just telling you they earn money online.
2. Making money from blogging need more time, you will not see the result just one day after you create your blog. I used to spend a lot of my time to find various ways to make money online faster. In fact, I regretted because there’s no magic in making money online. 2 hours per day would allow you to update you blog regularly and 6 months or 1 year later, you can start to earn money from your blog. By limit working 2 hours per day, would allow you to have fun time with family and friends. This will make more sense to your life and your blog.
What is a blog by the way?
Blog is like a dairy that you wrote on when you were young. There’s a titile and text description. Thank to the smart people, they create various platform for blogging so that we can arrange the entries by date, month, year or categories and we can research the old posts by simple typing the keyword or anything you remind of.
You can publish you blog to public or invitation only. It is up to you, but most of the people they publish their posts in public so that people can read and comment back. That’s the first advantage if we compare to the dairy. It’s your blog, you can write anything you want, about anything you like or hate. It’s your blog, you can express who are you and tell truly what you feel toward the things around you. Don’t care what people is going to react. Be yourself!
Why Should We Have a Blog?
You would need a blog when you have something to share. It is useful for people that have passion in any topic and they want to blog about their passion. Don’t waste your time with blogging if you want just to want just to make money online. There’s other way that you can earn money online, without a blog. I will cover this topic someday when I have time.
You would need a blog because you want people to advice you on a specific topic or problem. Posting any problem on your blog will allow other person to read your problem and if they want to help, they can provide you something via their comments.
You would need a blog if you want to make friends with other people that shared the same vision and exchange ideas on any specific topic, for example food.
Having a blog doesn’t require any skill, anybody that can use computer, can have a blog. I heard a lot of people said I am not an IT, why should I have a blog. This is wrong. Blog will bring you funs and make you a lot of good friends that have the same vision, same spirit of life. It would make your blog more interesting if you can make money from it. It would increase you revenue and you can make your wife smile to you everyday. I hope even you don’t make any money, she still smile! LOL
Different Type of Blog’s Platform
There are different types of blogging platforms, some are free some need to pay. I will show you 4 different platforms:
This is what I am using for this blog. This is the best blogging platform on earth. It is easy to use with their friendly interface and easy to install and maintenance. That’s why people love to use it. There’s one thing I want you to keep in mind, it must have enough reasons when it’s popular and used by top bloggers around the world. You can’t be wrong if you follow what worked for them, because it will work for you too. The platform is free but you need to pay for domain and web hosting. I will explain in more details on session installation.
It is the same platform as WordPress Self-hosted and it’s free. It is good if you know nothing about blogging, you can start to have a blog there and play around with the platform. You don’t have to pay for domain and hosting fee. But there’s limitation if you want to make money from your blog. Since so far, you cannot display Adsense. You cannot modify the style of your theme, unless you purchase credit to modify it. You cannot install any additional plugins.
I don’t advice you to use this platform if you want to blog seriously and make money from it. Choose the first platform that I just showed you. This is the right way to create a blog since the beginning. It’s good to start everything from the right starting point.
3. Blogger.com
It is a free blog provided by Google. You can put Adsense on it for sure. The problem is that you don’t have full control on your blog. If one day something wrong, Google can claim your blog back and you will lose everything. I hope this won’t happen to anyone.
The other things is that there’s no plugins that allow you to make your blog more powerful. I saw a lot of people decide to move their blog from blogger to wordpress. They must have a good reasons for it.
4. TypePad
To be frank, I never try this platform. It is not a free platform, you need to pay for monthly fee. I don’t see the reason why you need to pay, when you can find a good free platform. If you still want to pay, you can register for account there. There’s also another point I want you to keep in mind, you need to focus on what you are doing to bring success. Looking at other things will waste your time and don’t allow you to concentrate on what you are doing. It is like when I am writing this post, it is going to be a long post but that’s OK. I didn’t think about other things. I only focus on my writing. Hope you understand what I mean here.
Domain Name
To have you own WordPress blog, you need to have a domain name. A domain name is the website address that you usually type in the address’s bar of your web browser, for exmaple google.com. You need to register your own domain that you need to pay for yearly fee. It is not expensive, usually it costs 10 USD for .com
There are different type of domain extensions, I will count the 4 most popular domain’s extensions:
- .com (It’s for commercial used, I would recommend you to choose this one for your blog)
- .net (It’s also for commercial used, but not popular as .com)
- .org (It’s for organization)
- . info (It’s for information website)
So you first step, first task right now is to register a domain name for your blog. The best way is to keep it short and easy to remember. And it is important also to add keyword into your domain name. If you need more tutorial on this, you can drop a comment and I will see if necessary to do a separate post on domain name.
Web Hosting
Web hosting is like a computer. You need to turn one your computer 24 hours if you want to host your blog on your computer. The most commune solution is to rent a part of servers from the Web Hosting and put your files there. By this way, people will be able to access to your blog 24 hours.
I am using bluehost.com to host my blog. They gave me one domain for free. It is good to purchase a package from them and you will have both domain and hosting at the same time, same place. It is more easy to manage.
There are few points I like about Bluehost:
- Install WordPress in one click, you don’t have to worry about any technical issue for installation. Bluehost will install everything for you.
- Unlimited to everything: domain, hosting space, bandwidth, Email Account etc
- Good support
- No big downtime (since I hosted with them, had only one long downtime due to electricity shutdown)
The price I paid when I purchase from them was discounted to 3.95 USD per month because it is the period of promotion for the purchase of 2 years. The promotion is ended and you need to pay 6.95 USD per month. But you know, that’s not expensive to host a blog. You need to invest some if you want to make money online. So what you need to do now is to make purchase web hosting at Bluehost.com
If you need more cheaper but still good web hosting that a lot of people used, I heard people love to purchase alternative web hosting hostgator.com They have 3 packages different but if you need to host just one domain, you can try the Hatchling Plan, purchase for two years, it would cost you only 5.95 USD per month. For this month November, they do a special promotion 20.00% off first package payment! If you purchase two years, the cost per month discounted to 4.76 USD.

Hi Mex, it is the same platform, Wordpress is a platform, the different is one is hosted by the creator of the Wordpress at wordpress.com, you can install the same platform on your hosting account, it is exactly the same dashboard.

PS: I have problem in logged into my hosting account to do the next tutorial on how to install Wordpress in your hosting account, I hope my ISP can resolve my problem in accessing to secured logged websites that using https,
