Last month, I finished The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It.
It’s a great book, written and narrated by Michael E. Gerber. I like this book a lot. I like it not only because it is well written in an easy way to understand (you know the level of my English). I like it because it talks about my situation right now.
I wanted to start a business.
Since early 2014, I was trying to increase income from my online business. 6 months later, nothing improve. I was stuck. My business was stuck as well. Michael gave an example about a barbershop which he entered by chance. The first time when he had haircut, the barber washed his hair before cut. He was offered a cup of coffee for free.
The next time, the barber didn’t wash his hair. The third time, he didn’t get any coffee.
He confessed that he didn’t know what to expect on his 4th visit. He decided not to go to that barbershop anymore.
The consistency is important for every business. Michael also provided example of McDonald and explained how important it is to maintain the same quality of food and services in every McDonald store all around the world.
This is also the reason why I decided to setup a new editorial calendar.
What you could learn from the book
I think a lot of people are in the same situation as mine. We believe we are the talent entrepreneurs who could work alone on our own. We work night and day. We are happy because we work for our own business.
If we keep this mindset, we can’t make our business grow. Soon or later, it is just a matter of time, our business will collapse.
We need to find ways to get out of daily operation. We can’t do the technician work and being the manager at the same time. Maybe you can handle in the beginning when you don’t have much customers to handle.
Michael will explain clearly the situation and show you the way out in this book The E-Myth Revisited.
Even you work for yourself alone in the company, you need to have a clear organization chart and job description for each position. This is important. Even from the beginning, you are the only one who fill in all the positions. It will help you when you decide to hire your first employee. You know exactly which position you are hiring him or her. Your first employee also knows exactly what kind of job you expect him or her to do.
This is the basic but it is very important.
I think there are many family companies or companies that founded by a group of closed friends. If your company don’t have a clear organization chart and job description for each person, be prepare for the bad situation to come.
It is good to have a good preparation before you create a company. It might not too late to do it. And that’s why I recommend this book to all the small business owners to listen to it, learn the principals from it and apply to your own business.
