You might know I am a big fan of Tottenham Hotspur, an English football club of the Premier League. I don’t play soccer myself but as a hobby, I like watching them play.
I like Spurs for many personal reasons. At the beginning, I just knew a few players there such as Son, Lloris and Kane. After watching a few matches, they became my favorite team.
It is nice to watch your favorite club win in the match but it won’t happen all the time. It’s football. Sometimes we win. Sometimes we lose.
But there is one thing that is interesting to me the most in soccer. The soccer players have a strong will to play better in the next match. If they lose in this match, they can learn from their mistakes. It is not the end of the world. There is always the next match that is waiting for them.
We can apply the same philosophy in our lives.
We should have a will to be a better person for the next day. It doesn’t matter if we make a mistake today. We need to take the responsibility of our own choice. It is not always the best choice. Accept the consequences and move on. As long as the next day is coming, we can be a better person than yesterday.
I want to write down a few steps to remind myself how to be a better person. I will share those steps here, in case anyone is interested to get started right away.
Having gratitude toward things around us
Before anything else, we need to appreciate what we have. We need to believe in ourselves and have faith in our capacity. We need to thank nature and the people around us. Take your well being seriously because no one else will do it for you.
Pay respect to the ancestors. Having gratitude and thanks to our parents. Once we understand where we come from, we are grounded. We have a clear mind and energy to accomplish anything in life.
That’s for me, it is an important step to get started.
Willing to change
If you keep doing the same things everyday, you will get the same results. Your life will be the same. Nothing will change. If you want to be a better person, you will need to evaluate what you are doing and find ways to do it better.
Let’s give an example. It is OK if you shout at your kids today. We all feel guilty about it. You might regret your action. You realize after all, it is not their fault. As the parents, you need to find a way to communicate to your kids. Control your anger and spend time to think how to help them not to repeat their mistakes again. Shouting at them is not a solution. You need to have a strong will to change things. Help them and teach them to have good behavior.
Otherwise, you will shout at your kids again.
Make the time
We as human beings need time to think and reflect. After we define what actions to be done, we need to make the time to do them. Do not make excuses that you don’t have time. We will have enough time. It depends on the priorities you arrange for your day. If there’s any priority task you need to do, schedule it. Put it in your calendar. Get a date and time. Some tasks, you might not be able to do on weekdays. Do it on the weekend. Take a day off. Close the shop. Wake up early. Change your job if necessary.
Do whatever necessary to have time to do necessary tasks that will make changes and improve the situation. It is time for you to take action and be a better person.
Keep the consistency
Little by little, day by day, you will be able to move things forward. Find a little time in your day to pay gratitude, clear your mind and be ready for the day.
Always want to be a better person. Do whatever you define as the most priority tasks.
When you start to see good results, keep doing it everyday, every week or every month. If there’s no result, maybe you need to ask for help from others or do your own research to find a solution to the issue you are having. Back to square one and start working on the problems.
Consistency is the key to success.
Helping others and community
Once you can resolve your own problems, share your experiences and help others to resolve their problems as well. It will give more meaning to your life. You will feel good when you can help someone. It will give you a sense of purpose.
Find a way to pay back to our community. Make new friends and get to know more people. There are a lot of things to discover and learn in life.
These are the steps that would help you to be a better person.
The soccer players need to work and train everyday. They can play better if they work hard.
We also can become a better person, a better husband, a better wife, a better father, a better mother, a better son, a better daughter or whoever you want to become.
You can be a better person if you have a strong will to change and commit to do the work.
