Someone at BarCamp Angkor asked me why I blog in English?
At the beginning back in 2008, there were not so many bloggers in Cambodia. People from the outside world heard about Cambodia only via CNN or big medias that focus on Cambodia only when there were big events, especially war or political crisis etc.
At that time I wanted KhmerBird to become a source where people could learn more about culture, lifestyle and contemporary stories.
That was also the main reason I start to write short stories.
Now we have more and more bloggers from Cambodia. In the list below, most of them write in English, some of them write in Khmer and a very few write in French.
But whatever language they use, the main purpose is to provide information about themselves, stories and their daily life.
I still think we need more writers in Cambodia. That’s also the reason I still continue to write these days.
Here are the Cambodia top blogs to read:
cambodiageek.com – It’s a new blog about careers in Cambodia. You can find a lot of useful information about jobs and tips for interviews. It is run by a part-time Cambodian blogger, Naren, who works as a recruitment consultant. Check it out and give him the supports.
blueladyblog.com – Kounila writes a lot. She writes almost everything related to education, politics, lifestyle, press freedom, culture, and social issues in Cambodia. I know her personally and met a few times.
She writes for The Phnom Penh Post, Gloal Voices and many others. You can learn more about her via this video where she spoke about Blogging The New Generation of Cambodia at TEDxPhnomPenh.
digitalchetra.com – Chetra don’t write often but when he writes, he writes well.
I heard he become the lecturer at IFL already. I send a word to him to encourage students to blog. Blogging could help them to improve their English, their thinking and also learn to tell a good story as well.
sopheapfocus.com – Sopheap talks often about politic and social issues. She used to work for Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR). We need courage, a lot of courage to talk about politic in Cambodia. She’s a brave one!
chamnanmuon.com – I met Chamnan a few times. Each time we have so many things to talk. We both share the same goal on making our blogs grow. He blogs about News, Business, Entertainment, and Mobile.
vuthychour.com – I followed Vuthy’s blog not long time ago. I like his writing about ordinary things in Cambodia. I look forward to read more from him.
thephnompenhkhmer.com – Owned by Kimsan. I met him in person one time and started to follow his blog since then. He blogs about Cambodia, Technology, Food and anything that matters to him.
andybrouwer.co.uk – Andy blogs a lot about Cambodia. I know him long time ago. His blog has a lot of good information about the country, places and arts.
sithenfreedom.blogspot.com – Sithen loves movies. We meet very often at Legend Cinema. He leads the Kon Khmer Koun Khmer community and one amount the organizers of FilmCAMpKH that will take place soon. I joined last year with my family. We had a lot of fun. We will join again this year for sure.
duckorino.blogspot.com – There’s one thing I never find out how she could put her lips in red color in every photo 🙂 Sovathary blogs a lot too. She likes taking photos. You will find a lot of interesting photos on her blog.
soklak.wordpress.com – I know Lak when we do some interview while he was working as a writer for a magazine. Currently, he is a freelancer economic reporter and co-founder of Writing Alliance, an independent student-run association aiming to promote writing awareness among Cambodian young generation.
keoleny.wordpress.com – I not yet have chance to meet him in person yet. He likes reading and writing. He dreams to open a book store.
chumreapsour.wordpress.com – It’s a blog from journalist student. There are a lot of interesting posts to read!
teplivina.com – There are a lot of self-development tips on Livina’s website. He is the author of the book: How To Become An Outstanding College Student.
khmerenterprise.com – It’s not just a blog but a community which I recently joined as media moderator. We also have a blog session where our writers share tips on technology and web development. Come and visit us sometime!
Can’t Stand by Neilly Din – I found her blog after Cambodia elections 2013. I comment often as well to her articles. She cares about what’s happening in Cambodia and shares her own point of view related to Cambodian politics. She writes from the bottom of her heart.
A Dose of Cath by Catherine V Harry – Catherine just turned out 19 a few weeks ago. She writes mostly about what she is curious about life.
ltocambodia.blogspot.com – Never had chance to know his name, crossed him at the monument book on the other day. He’s an expat who lives and works in Cambodia. He likes to write about Cambodia culture, events and lifestyle.
alfredmeier.me – I not yet have chance to meet him but followed his blog quite a while now. He blogs a lot about politic in Cambodia.
cityofwater.wordpress.com – The blog is handled by Shelby Elizabeth Doyle, a Fulbright Research Fellow based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She blogs about Architecture, Infrastructure and the Floods of Phnom Penh.
ourdearladyexpatriate.blogspot.com the blog is handled by a lady expatriate who lives and works in Phnom Penh.
khmer440.com – Khmer 440 is not really a blog but it’s something bigger. It has many useful information about Cambodia and a dedicated forum for expats in Cambodia to interact with each other.
tamabmmo.wordpress.com – We used to discuss on Facebook but not yet have chance to meet in person. He shares a lot interesting information related to Cambodia culture, history and films.
akbalthom.blogspot.com – He’s a Tech guy I think. We used to discuss and share a lot on Google+.
porpok.com – Founded by Oudom. I met him often, especially at BarCamp. He likes Technology. You can find a lot of good information about mobile phones, technology and tips.
sombokit.com – I met Sopheak a few times. The site has a lot of good tips of web development. They share this for free. I found a lot of useful information from their posts.
sokchanphal.info – Chanphal is a song writer. He composed the lyric for Hang Meas production. He wrote a lot of short stories and published many books already.
khmertype.org – This is the blog of Mr. Danh Hong, creator of Khmer Google Fonts. You can find a lot of good information about how to display Khmer Unicode on the websites and mobiles.
itkhmer.net – a community of Tech Khmer writers.
kh4it.com – a blog about Technology and game in Khmer, handled by Mr. Chheang Vuthea and Mr. Pharak Chanrotana.
cambodroid.com – a good blog about mobile phones of all kinds. You might find a good tutorial on how to install Khmer Unicode on your phone. Check them out!
