Living in Cambodia on Less Than $500 a Month

by khmerbird on January 20, 2010

Getting around by tuk tuk. By tajai

Other than Pol Pot, the spectacular ruins of Angkor Wot and, according to the Cambodians, Muay Thai style kick boxing, Cambodia doesn’t really hit the map for an awful lot of things – and let’s face it, in the case of Pol Pot maybe some things are certainly best forgotten.

But it is cheap – and there are very few places left in the world where you can live very cheaply, but if you’re prepared to live frugally it can be done here. Prices in the capital Phnom Penh have been rising but you can still live on $500 (roughly £340) a month in Cambodia.

Cambodia on my mind

by khmerbird on January 18, 2010

Source: travelpod

Arriving by fast boat/bus in PP around 3pm, I set out to find a guesthouse and a SIM card so I can get connected in Cambodia. The border crossing was not as easy as described in the LP.

At the Vietnamese border, we and our luggage had to leave the boat and get our luggage x-rayed. Then we went back to the boat and off to the Cambodian side. There, we could leave the luggage on the boat and get our passports stamped.

Then off to PP on the beautiful Mekong river. Though taking the bus from Saigon might be cheaper, if you have time, taking the boat is the thing to do.

Day 1 – Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh

by khmerbird on April 20, 2008

a tour without guide into a foreign country where no one speak English. It was very difficult to communicate… everyone contributed their gestures skill to get something to eat, to find a place to sleep.

We left Phnom Penh around 6 am by a Mercedes Benz of 12 seats. Arrived at Bavet border around 10 am. The immigration at the border was not so welcomed to the independent tourists. Most of them take care only tour group tourists.

We completed the Immigration forms, and we waited very long time at the Vietnam immigration counter. They didn’t look at us who did the queues in front of the counter, they took care only the passports from the tours leaders. If you want to pass first you need to put 100 000 Dongs,

they made us completely mad…

Since long time i wanted to go to Prey Nokor

by khmerbird on April 11, 2008

Prey Nokor was a port,
it was an important port to the Khmers,

then there was a long story,
it is hard to tell you how i feel when i read all history about this city
mostly i feel regret and i always keep in mind,
we should be more cleaver than what we was,
don’t see thing as it is, we have to think and make reflection

Saigon, it was renamed to Saigon, as Willard said in the opening scene of Apocalypse Now,

Saigon, shit. I’m still only in Saigon.

now i will go there to see it myself,
i planed to go by boat as i saw in the movie of The Lover

The lover is a movie by Jean-Jacques Annaud,
i love the scene that shot in the river
but the boat ticket are fully booked, and we need to go bus or car

this is a scene from Cholon, where they both make love for the very first time
in the house where near by the market, all the noise coming up
it was an amazing scene, romance and sexy.

i will join a group of 8 people and we plan to continue to Dalat and Nha Trange,
Why Nha Trange?

Because like in the Apocalypse Now, when Solider came to escort WILLARD from his room,

SOLDIER
“We have orders to escort you to the airfield.”
WILLARD
“What are the charges ?”
SOLDIER
“Sir ?”
WILLARD
“What I did ?”
SOLDIER
“There’s no charges, Captain. You have orders to report
to ComSec intelligence in Nha Trang.”

WILLARD
“Nha Trang?”

Everyone gets everything he wants. I wanted a mission, and for my sins they gave me one. Brought it up to me like room service.

It will be a 7 days trips start from 13 to 19 April.
hopefully we can ride a motorcycle like Angelina and Brad
