Why Cambodian Student Mostly Go To More Than One University?

This is my first post on KhmerBird. Please support my writing! I am exciting to be one of the content writers here.

I want to share my own opinion about education system in Cambodia nowadays. Why most of us go to study more than one university? Is it a good thing to do? Do we enough have time to concentrate?

Please share also you own opinion at the comment session, thank you.

Cambodian Student (Source: http://khmernz.blogspot.com)

Recently, most of Cambodian students study two universities in the same time. Why they study like this?

As we know, studying one university is difficult, how about two what’s going to happen?

When I ask my friend this question, they said that jobs are difficult to find if we study only one major. For example, we study Finance and banking, we also need to learn one more major like English Literature etc. So we can combine two of these majors together for fighting the job’s market in our country.

Some people said that they don’t want to study two universities, but their parents force them to study. Therefore, they have no choice just only follow them.

In my opinion, one university is enough. If we study two universities, it looks like we make our brain work hardly.

As example, I study one university, it causes me much stress, many assignments, many exams; if two maybe I cannot catch any lessons.

My friends blame me when I think like this. They still introduce me to study two majors which are easy to find a good job in the future.

But can you imagine?

If u cannot learn anything from those universities, what are you going to do?

For instance, when we have the exam at the same time, we do not know which one should be prepare and review first. Sometimes it can make us get illness and give up everything.

One or two universities are not so important. The necessary is depending on how smart we are to reflect to those majors.

Why students don’t read any part of their trophy books at either of 2 colleges ??? Talk about the absurd nature of incurious non-scholarship…Cambodia is the king of nice but stupid.

      Hi Ray,

I hardly understand what you mean in your comment, maybe my English is not good enough. But in stead of saying Cambodia is stupid, we need to understand what happened in the country as well.We are recovering and re-building our country. It is not an easy step but we need to participate together in this movement to help to push Cambodia into the next level.

In my opinion, It depend on whether students feel OK with two universities at the same time. As we know most students after completed BacII they prefer office subject like Account, Marketing Management, IT … which is they don’t know about what are current jobs need. Anyway, thanks for blog. I love to read blog talking about Cambodia society.

As a practitioner in higher education for more than 10 years, I am always against the idea of attending 2 universities at the same time. At the end of each academic year, the students who perform worst in my class are those who study 2 universities at the same time. They don’t have time to do the home work and assignment. They don’t even have spare time for social, cultural or sport activities which are also very important for brain development.

The reason behind this motivation is perhaps the fact that our students (and the parents) do not have a clear vision/information of job market and the skill orientation to choose. So the idea of having degree in several fields is to optimize the chance to get a job. The basic reflexion is that if you have degree in different fields, you can apply for jobs in different places (misperceived idea of course).

To fight again this phenomena, students need more information on the job and skill orientation so that they can make a well-informed decision on the field of study.

      Thank Sopheap,

The student should learn to know themselves and have an idea what they want to do in the future. This would help them to make a good decision and choose only one university.

Your comment have prove us that the student who go to more than one university has very poor performance.

All  the parents who think again before sending their children to any university.

Thank and really appreciate your comment!

What Ray was saying is that why study at 2 universities when students don’t bother to read their assigned course books for even 1 university?  Students are ignorantly overburdening themselves or being overburdened by ill-advised parents, and cannot complete their studies adequately.

I agree with the comment of Sopheap.  The problem of the job market is not simply having a university degree, or two.  In fact, there are too many degree-holding students in Cambodia for the types of jobs available. And many of these degrees don’t hold any value because of the poor quality of the many private institutions that are just becoming degree mills. Not only that, but students are often pursuing the most popular degrees which are not the most practical, nor even the most appropriate for the job market.

The article “Shifting Gears” (http://www.phnompenhpost.com/index.php/2012020754362/Special-Reports/shifting-gears.html) published on Tuesday 7 February in the Phnom Penh Post addresses the real issue which is “the mismatch between skills the education system produces and those needed by the private sector.” In other words, students need an education in how to pursue a post-secondary education.  They need to spend time looking at the potential of the job market before deciding.

Thank for comment and link to PPP, I do agree that the quality of the degree in Cambodia, this is something the ministry of education need to review and monitor.

That is right. Finding jobs are the motivation behind this. Cambodian education system is very week. How do you expect kids to learn when they only go to school a few hours a day. How our graduates can compete for the job in international markets. Can our students compete for technology jobs with Indian, Thai, or Vietnamese students? For better future education system need a lot of improvement.
