Benjamin and Sreykeo in Phnom Penh
what kind of love story you can write about Cambodia?
i definitively got no idea to reply you. there are many i guess but which one to write about ? it’s more about which one is the most priority ? i have asked myself in my fiction short story The revolver, i have tried to show it in various short stories, you might find some i guess.
“Same Same, but different” is a new film from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. it’s a Germany production, joined cast by David Kross, a young artists played face to face to Kate Winslet in The Reader,
the story based a the true story, an autobiography written by Benjamin Prüfer. After finishing school Benjamin, a young German, goes on a long journey through Asia. In Phnom Penh he meets the Cambodian girl Sreykeo and instantly falls in love with her. It is only after their first night together that he discovers she works as a bargirl.
Sreykeo is not different from Somaly my character i created in Women in Cambodian Society
there’s no way out, the more you know Cambodia the more you want to stay, it’s a country of magic. many people tried hard to find the reason but the most of all it’s the magic country. something that you feel about, but hard to explain. as i always remember the quote from the movie China Box:
Sometime you just fall in love with a place, you don’t know why…
it’s exactly the same feeling.

check out the production website, they shoot many places in Cambodia and what make me sad about is that the Thai actress Apinya Sakuljaroensuk played as Sreykoe. i believe we should have Cambodian talent actress to play in such touching love story role.
Same Same but different will be screened the world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival this month, and plan to do the premier screen in Phnom Penh on 08 Oct 2009
