Painting a naked Apsara is not a crime!

by khmerbird on December 22, 2008

apsaraOur friends at Reahu seems have a lot of trouble recently about their works. i seems to remember we use to chat sometime and i know about this project seems long time ago. They paint some naked Apsara by using computer with a kind of technology that for the moment still is a thing to learn for me.

The Phnom Penh post published online at their website an article under the title Apsara ‘porn’ site to be shut.

oh please it’s definitive not a porn site. it’s a passion and hard work. We call it the work of art, and what is coming out from their work we call it painting. There is alternative title that could tell the real situation for example Painting a naked Apsara is not a crime! or something else but definitive not fair for them to use such a tittle. or maybe other people see it as a porn site? for me it’s a hard work and creative, for me a naked woman is the most beautiful thing in this world ;-)

but of course the naked painting could be a mature object and need to be hidden from the eyes of the teenager. at least put an adult contents warning message as for example : Adult content is intended for individuals 18 years of age and older and contains materials of sexually explicit nature. If you are not of legal age or if it is illegal for you to view such material, please LEAVE immediately! or hidden some sensible parts as Hollywood use to cut or push the camera away LOL i try to learn the photoshop a bit to be able to hide what could make sexual attention or i am going to shut down my website due this photo. i think i will deal with it. but we will not go too far to shut down their website. i still repeat it again here Painting a naked Apsara is not a crime!

I thought it was a real picture capture by digital camera.

I believe Reahu’s apsaras are quite tamed compared to the body of work by Italian Renaissance artists that bared breasts and male genitals. Yet I don’t see any feminist groups in Italy all up in arms over the display of the David and Venus de Milo. Obviously Reahu’s interpretation is more provocative and edgy but it is still modern art and should not be confused as porn. These people don’t understand that the Apsaras were still presented in a tasteful and artful way. It’s unfortunate they have the nerve to condemn the site and the artist. Obviously these narrow minded parochial and extremely conservative folks at the PP Post have no artistic appreciation.

Oh, I thought like Piseth. Besides the criticism, I think they do a really really great job.. It looks like real.. if it were photography, it’d not be worth a dime.. but if it’s actually art made by the team, it should be appreciated.. and more to say, sth should be explained more clearly to the public!

I think that was an awesome art work. I am tired of seeing apsara on the wall, she needs to come out and play in the water.

I really like your job, Reahu. You guys have done a great job; moreover, it seems real and show natural of human beings. However, before u did this Naked Apsara, have you ever though about our country? We know you guys has a lot of skills compare to Cambodian people. We can not compare to you guys because you guys are Cambodian-American, but we just Cambodian. The people who are uneducated in your mind. I seems have a lot of things to say to you, Reahu. To be honest, I love Apsara. They are all my spirit. On the other hand, I dont want to their naked body, even if it is real or fake. Let me ask you a question,” what do u like the most in your life?” So what will happen if someone ruin the things that you like the most in your life. Let say, so what if someone create a fake picture of you mum. I do not want to say something more, nor do I want you to shut down your website. You do not have to do it then. Just continue your work, but please think about something more valuable. I do not mean that you are wrong; you did your skills because you guys are an artist. there is no complains. JUST DO IT IN THE RIGHT WAYS!!

I dislike any censorship, and to call your artwork “porn” is an OUTRAGE! Quel outrage! Why can’t they just and go watch mindless Simpson’s cartoons on TV and drink their stupid Bud lite and leave you the hell alone! I love Apsaras! BEAUTIFUL! I painted one–it’s here on my myspace page.

Way back thousand years ago, ancient Cambodia appsara it’s meant be topless, on the Angkor Wat stones sculptures are topless there’s no cloth on for thousand years. Why we take this as a serious issue? This is the Khmer culture of Apsara. If the Apsara wearing cloths that is not called Apsara.

I don’t think this pictures is at all offensive and does not make Khmer women into pornographic images. The people who are conservative about this are the same people who themselves watch pornographic movies and have sex on the mind all the time. This is a beautiful piece of art.

there is nothing wrong with this picture it is beautiful. Khmer culture has become very conservative over the years. yet the very people complaining about this picture are the ones who probably watch pornographic videos and have sex on the mind all the time. there is nothing wrong and it is a very good picture of beauty. Keep painting and sharing your talent.
