AS the Cambodian film industry struggles with piracy and film closures, many local filmmakers have trouble finding their place in the industry.
This hasn’t stopped 28-year-old filmmaker Kao Seiha from starting production of a drama that tackles some of Cambodia’s more sensitive subjects.
Kao Seiha’s movie, High School Love’s Story, deals with the tale of a family whose mother abandons her HIV-positive husband.
“It mainly focuses on the situation of people living with HIV/AIDS, gay sex and the discrimination people living with HIV/AIDS endure,” said Kao Seiha at the ceremony marking the beginning of shooting.

Hi Khmer Bird. I’m looking forward to watching this movie. At the same time there is another Khmer Movie about a Western Man who falls in love with a Khmer Girl (I think it was released recently but I for the name). IN that story the girl is HIV Positive but the western falls in love with but eventually she dies and he returns to his home. Okay so the movie has this plot but I think it plays into the fantasies of many Khmer people (women) who have hopes of having a western boyfriend or husband to bring them out of their poverty state. And I think why not! If they get to love each other it should be fine.
Now the movie High School Love Story is an interesting take on young Khmer people these days. There is no doubt that there is a definite love between two people of the same gender, in some parts it might be open and in others it might not be. But I think this story will help many young people who are struggling with their gender deal with many issues.
I have a gay friend who is getting married. He is getting married because culture says so. And I understand this. Another friend of mine also said the cultural expectations are much stronger than the personal aspirations and feelings. I understand this too as I come from a similar context.
So any Khmer Bird, it is good to see the young Khmer people being more open to their feelings and not suppressing them.

i believe more and more people are opened for this king of thing, maybe you missed my tweet, here is the first Cambodia guy blog and i believe there are many others blog, here is the link http://gknetwork.wordpress.com/
Yes you are right Khmer Bird. I’ve seen this happen on a few occasions with friends here. And the web page you linked I saw it too. And now many Khmer gay people are writing in Khmer their thoughts and experiences and ideas which is very good. Thanks for the link.
Finally I am encouraging many of my Khmer friends to write and interact with blogs to share their experiences and thoughts. I’ve lived in Cambodia over 7 years now and I think I understand Cambodia a lot more. It helps when I live with a Cambodian family. So thanks again for your thoughts.
Dear Paddy: The movie that you are talking about is called “Same Same but Different”
Khmer Bird: First of all, I feel very glade that Cambodian film industry is now reawakening. However, I have read the summary of the movie “High School’s Love Story”, and it reminds me about a Thai movie I used to watch which is called “Bangkok Love Story” I do hope that the next film they make should be more original or at least Don’t just copy the whole idea from others.
Thanks
