i used to play the kite when i was young, even it was not that big but i remember i did have a lot of fun with it.

we start playing the kites at the beginning of the dry season when the wind change their direction when the water in the river Tonle Sap flow back into the sea.

if you not yet heard, it’s here in Cambodia that the river can flow back, change its direction.

it’s not the only one thing that make Cambodia different from others countries but there are various factors that make me believe it’s the reason why i always have hope and optimist for Cambodia to build the country, gain the power as strong as the glory period of Angkor.

there’s a lot of things you will know more about Cambodia. i want to introduce you today the traditional Khmer kites, which will give you more understanding about Khmer Art and Culture.

The kite flies higher because of the wind,
The chief highly honors because of the numbers,
The fortunes are saved by a good wife,
The prosperous house is because of a faithful wife.

Preah Raj Samphar,
Chbab Trei-neti (Code of Conducts), 17th century, Cambodia

the quote is from a book, Khmer Kites, written by Mr. Sim Sarak and Mr. Cheang Yarin. i believe the two authors has spend a lot of their time to collect all the information and publish into a book.

it would be interesting for the Kite’s lover and those who want to have information about Cambodia’s brief geographic setting and kite season in Cambodia, different kinds of Khmer kites, its origin and it has also the guide on how to make those kites.

it’s the essential book for Cambodian people of the next generation, to have such document to learn how to make the kites and enjoy sometime with the wind, family and kids.

we also had some Kites festival in Cambodia few years ago, but now i didn’t see it anymore, maybe one day they will organize this festival again, you can find some photos of the festival Khmer Kites Cambodia

Fascinated to read your post, since I reference Asian kites of many types throughout my website! However, I have not taken a good look at Khmer kites in particular. Browsing through the festival pages, I noticed the monkey kite, crocadile kite and chicken kite in particular. I suppose there is some common ancestry with Malaysian wau kites?

If you want to, why not share your best Khmer kite picture, with a few kite-making comments, on my site? Many more kite-lovers from around the world will see it then :-)
