Tips for Khmer Bloggers

Project Free Blogs for Cambodian

by khmerbird on August 11, 2009

Wordpress followed my last post about 3 things to do before you start a blog khmerbird will provide free blogs to the Cambodian people who live in Cambodia.

Purpose

i first start using internet many years ago just to flirt girls and looking for dirty photos LOL it’s true for everybody i guess :-)

now internet to me is a way we can share information and make benefit from it. main purpose is to give facility to those that want to express their ideas and write things about Cambodia.

the registration is only limited to people who resident in Cambodia, and combine all those voice together to one place.

second one is to generate some revenue from blogging. my blog got 3 revenue, for example for the month of July, i got 19.88 USD from Text Link Ads, 19.30 USD from Linkworth and 66.74 USD from Adsense

so total i have earned 105.92 for the whole month of July.

here are the prove of the revenues:

adsense

text link ads

linkworth

it’s not a salary or it will not stable like this it can go up or down, i hope it will go up for sure.

How

it’s easy, i know how the system works for Cambodia people, register to get a blog, write whatever you want to write about but no pornography is allowed, the main purpose is to provide contents about Cambodia will help to promote our country and make theme know that Cambodian also got blogs and can earn some money from blogging.

i am in the process to setup the system, so that you can focus only on the information you want to share, the rest is on Khmerbird.

the system works for me, and it can work for you as well.

Why

why i am doing this? will i share the revenue with you? no, you will earn 100% of what you earn from the affiliate. i just put a link back to my blog so that it will help my blog to get more traffic and i can earn more. i don’t play any tricks with you guys and i also want to see other Cambodian people got their own blogs and make money from blogging.

When

i will take sometime to test the system, so that once you register you got everything you need to start a blog. let’s say the tentative launch day is the 1st of next month or it can be delayed of any technical issue but normally i think we will launch it on time.

hope you will be happy to start and blog, sharing information to your friends and to the whole world with an easy tools and at the end of the day you can earn something from your blogs.

if you need any more information, please drop the comments.

Cheers,

Children of the Khmer Cambodian dance group

Children of the Khmer Cambodian dance group, photo by Kenny Maths

i like watching Cambodian dance,

last time i admired the talent of Chey Chankethya when she danced a new style that she created.

i was moving by her movements, it’s good to see Cambodian people started to express themselves.

beside Chey Chankethya, there are many others young Cambodian talents that also want to express themselves.

at the moment i wrote 3 things to do before you start a blog another ideas has come is to provide a free blog to those that got something to express about Cambodia and/or himself.

for example, i just setting and hosted http://www.blueladyblog.com for free. this blue lady like to blog about Cambodia and staying at blogger.com or wordpress.com will limited her ability to move beyond. she just moved from blogger.com and have migrated her blog to wordpress.

soon blogger from Cambodia can get a free blog and write about anything they like but at least every users that sign up for Free Blog need to respect minimum the main objective to provide a place where people can find information and learn more about Cambodia. i don’t think it’s a restriction but it’s the main purpose why i make this project.

as the same time, i will provide them a system which they can also earn an extract money for their income. it’s not something bad and it won’t disturb the reader if we do it in a right way.

the choice of revenue i think to set up is adsense. i will explain more why we choose adsense and how we can make money from it when the site is launched.

but this doesn’t mean it’s a fix salary or it is something stable for earn a living, unless you did the right thing and work hard. it’s true that many blogger can earn money from their blog but only a few 2% only that can make a living from their blog.

if you not yet read America’s Newest Profession: Bloggers for Hire i think you would go and read it. it’s a good information source about blogging situation.

i optimist in internet technology and i hope to get involved in this domain, helping people in sharing information and to be a part of media network.

follow me to get more update news on this @khmerbird

3 things to do before you start a blog

by khmerbird on July 20, 2009

Blogit might easy to find a hosting server and choose a domain, everybody knows how to do it. i am talking here the initially steps, the things that you might do it first before you jump into the technical parts. i got few friends that suffer in blogging, they like blogging but their blog doesn’t grow, they got no visitors, they earn very little from google adsense,

as i mentioned earlier, i will share here what i have learned from blogging,

this post is reserved only for those who want to have a blog and plan to get some money from the blog, if you just blogging for blogging i don’t think you want to read it more.

ok let’s go to the point,

Ask yourself What you can write about

in your life you will discover something you like the most, some of my friends they like football, some of them they like drinking … some of them they like beautiful girls .. . but whatever ask yourself what topic you want to write about.

for example i am passionate in film especially Asian cinema. i know a lot of good films that i want to share, so i started first writing about films.

you can write about sport, food or news … it depends on your passion. think about it and write it down somewhere.

Details a bit about what you plan to write

i started khmerbird.com without proper preparation, that’s why i changed sometime, but if you do a proper preparation you don’t have to change it unless you want to adjust or add more topics to your blog.

for example the description of my blog right now is something like this: a regularly updating blog mainly give you the last update from Cambodia, the country of smile. the blog also focus on latest news of Asian films, literature and web development.

you can describe more to let people know what your blog is about, it should not more than 160 words, this is the practice and rule. write it in a simple way but keep it mind that it will appear on the search engine where people is going to decide weather they click on your blog or not, so please spend sometime to write it.

Choose Keyword for your blog

keyword is important, keyword will bring traffic to your blog, a proper setting of keywords will also bring high pay adsense.

i started to arrange the position of google adsense and optimize the keyword for each post, i can see now as the report below i can earn in average USD 2.47 per day, it’s not bad at all for a small blog like mine.

AdSense Reports

i plan to write a details information later about keyword, but if you can think about it now, write it down somewhere you might need them when you setup a blog or find a domain name.

there are a lot of free keyword tools, you can google it. but i would recommend you to start to use Keywork tools of Google Adwords.

to get an account you need to sing up and provide some information to google, once you got an account, type the topic that you want to write about and click on “get keyword ideas”, you can follow as screen shot belowKeyword Tool

this tools is free and will help you a lot to know what kind of keyword that people looking for concern your topic. it tell you the monthly report of how many time people research per keyword. from there you might get an idea what kind of keyword you want to put on your blog.

for setting those keywords into your blog, you won’t need it more than 10. 10 is the maximum number of keyword for a blog or a page. so you can start to select 10 keywords.

i will write another post that you will need 500 keywords, where you can get using the same tools to find a right domain for your topic.

please come back later to find more blog tips if you really want to setup a blog, this place will show you step to step for free.

for today just think about these 3 things: topic, description and keyword.

hope to see you again soon,
bye

get news updated by Google Web Elements

by khmerbird on June 30, 2009

Google News Elementyou might wonder how can i set up the Google news on the top right of my front page, and it’s an auto updated directly from Google.

well i am using one of the Google Web Elements called Google New Element,

Inspired by the convenience of embeddable YouTube videos, Google Web Elements build on favorite products like Google Custom Search (a Google-powered search engine that automatically tailors itself to your site), Google Docs, and Google News to easily add richness and interactivity to your website with the simplicity of copy and paste.

Each element is designed to help you get started quickly without spending time on the deep technical details. Yet behind it all, Google Web Elements are powered by Google’s scalable and flexible developer APIs, offering a world of customization just beneath the surface, keeping up with your site as it grows.

Adding Google Web Elements to your website is as easy as visiting the homepage, choosing the ones you like, and customizing them to fit your page.

For example, the News element adds headline news about the topics you choose to any page. Just go to the News element page and use the wizard to update the live preview as you change the topics and pick the best size for your site.

When you like what you see, simply copy the short embed code and paste it into the HTML of your page.

try it by yourself Google Web Elements

Free adsstarting for the whole month of July, Khmerbird will provide 8 units 125×125 free space to let any advertiser to test how many traffic khmerbird could drive to their company webstie,

the advertising banner will be placed on the top left sidebar of the main page,

Why need blogger to adverting your company website?

some business company got very good website, well design and full of useful information but they don’t have much visitors due to few reasons:

their contents is not usually updated, google and other search engines don’t like the page that don’t have any update. i can see a lot of business websites don’t have good page rank as the bloggers.

the bloggers update their page almost everyday, sometime more than two or three articles, they got a lot of different people, come from different places, that’s the real reason why the blogger got high page rank and more visitors than a normal website.

some of business website don’t make any marketing strategy to get more visitors or links from others.

my blog got very good page range, now i got 500 pageviews everyday and i think it will continue to grow more and more.

i have setting up by using the famous wp125 wordpress plugin, as you can see when you arrive on the front page of khmerbird.com, the square 125×125 is running with wp125,

i like the plugin, easy to setup and manage your 125×125 advertising banner, you can point to image and url and also set the expired date of each banner, i would recommend to all the new bloggers.

from this plugin, i can know how many clicks have been performed for each advertising space, now i am running thesis theme and blog mastermind

i plan to accept 8 more advertising banners and running for free for the whole month of July 2009, please contact me if you are interesting in running ads with khmerbird.

headache

There are basically two types of bloggers in the world – reporters and experts – and some people perform both roles (usually the experts, it’s hard for reporters to become experts, but it’s easy for experts to report).

If you have ever taken an Internet marketing course or attended a seminar specifically for beginners, you have probably heard about the two different methodologies. Whenever the business model is based on content, and if you blog for money then the model is based on content, people are taught to either start as reporters, or if possible step up as experts.

I’ll be frank; you want to be the expert.

Reporters leverage the content of the experts and in most cases people start off as reporters because they haven’t established expertise. Experts enjoy the perks of preeminence, higher conversion rates because of perceived value, it’s easier to get publicity, people are more likely to seek you out rather than you having to seek others out, joint ventures come easier, etc… experts in most cases simply make more money and attract more attention.

Most Bloggers Are Reporters

The thing with expertise is that it requires something – experience. No person becomes an expert without doing things and learning. Bloggers usually start out without expertise and as a result begin their blogging journey by talking about everything going on in their niche (reporting) and by interviewing and talking about other experts (reporting again).

There’s nothing wrong with reporting of course and for many people it’s a necessity at first until you build up some expertise. Unfortunately the ratios are pretty skewed when it comes to reporters and experts – there are a lot more reporters than there are experts, hence reporters tend to struggle to gain attention and when they do, they often just enhance the reputation of the expert they are reporting on.

Don’t Replicate Your Teacher

If you have ever spent some time browsing products in the learn Internet marketing niche you will notice a pattern. Many people first study Internet marketing from a guru (for lack of a better term). The guru teaches how he or she is able to make money online, and very often the view that the student gleams is that in order to make money online you have to teach others how to make money online.

The end result of this process is a huge army of amateurs attempting to replicate what their teacher does in the same industry – the Internet marketing industry – not realizing that without expert status based on a proven record and all the perks that come with it, it’s next to impossible to succeed.

Even people, who enjoy marginal success, say for example growing an email list of 1,000 people, then go out and launch a product about how to grow an email list of 1,000 people. Now I have no problems with that, I think it’s fine to teach beginners and leverage whatever achievements you have, the problem is that people gravitate to the same niche – Internet marketing – and rarely have any key points of differentiation.

How many products out there do you know of that all claim to teach the same things – email marketing, SEO, pay per click, affiliate marketing, and all the sub-niches that fall under the category of Internet marketing. It’s a saturated market, yet when you see your teachers and other gurus making money teaching others how to make money (and let’s face it – making money as a subject is one of the most compelling) – your natural inclination is to follow in their footsteps.

If the key is to become an expert and you haven’t spent the last 5-10 years making money online, I suggest you look for another niche to establish expertise in.

Report on Your Process, Not Others

The secret to progress from reporter to expert is not to focus on other experts and instead report on your own journey. When you are learning how to do something and implementing things day by day, or studying other people’s work, you need to take your process and what you do as a result of what you learn, and use it as content for your blog.

It’s okay to talk about experts when you learn something from them, but always relate it to what you are doing. If you learn a technique from an expert it’s fine to state you learned it from them (and affiliate link to their product too!) but you should then take that technique, apply it to what you are doing and then report back YOUR results, not there’s. Frame things using your opinion – your stories – and don’t regurgitate what the expert said. The key is differentiation and personality, not replication.

Expertise comes from doing things most people don’t do and then talking about it. If you do this often enough you wake up one day as an expert, possibly without even realizing how it happened, simply because you were so good at reporting what you did.

You Are Already An Expert

Most people fail to become experts (or perceived as experts) because they don’t leverage what they already know. Every person who lives a life learns things as they go, takes action every day and knows something about something. The reason why they never become an expert is because they choose not to (which is fine for some, not everyone wants to be an expert), but if your goal is to blog your way to expertise and leave the world of reporting behind you have to start teaching and doing so by leveraging real experience.

Experience can come from what you do today and what you have done previously; you just need to take enough steps to demonstrate what you already know and what you are presently learning along your journey. I know so many people in my life, who are experts simply by virtue of the life they have lived, yet they are so insecure about what they know, they never commit their knowledge to words for fear of well fear.

Blogs and the Web in general, are amazing resources when you leverage them as a communication tool to spread your expertise because of the sheer scope of people they can reach. If all you ever do is talk to people in person and share your experience using limited communication mediums, you haven’t much hope of becoming an expert. Take what you know and show other people through blogging, and you might be surprised how people change their perception of you in time.

Reporting Is A Stepping Stone

If your previous experience and expertise is from an area you want to leave behind or you are starting from scratch, then reporting is the path you must walk, at least for the short term.

Reporting is a lot of fun. Interviewing experts, talking about what other people are doing and just being part of a community is not a bad way to blog. In many cases people make a career of reporting (journalism is about just that), but if you truly want success and exponential results, at some point you will have to stand up and proclaim yourself as someone unusually good at something and then proceed to demonstrate it over and over again.

Have patience and focus on what you do to learn and then translate that experience into lessons for others, and remember, it’s okay to be a big fish in a small pond, that’s all most experts really are.

10 Blog Traffic Tips by Yaro Starak

by khmerbird on June 24, 2009

web traffic

In every bloggers life comes a special day – the day they first launch a new blog. Now unless you went out and purchased someone else’s blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader – you. Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that’s about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.

Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called "traction", which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.

Top 10 Tips

10. Write at least five major “pillar” articles. A pillar article is a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good “how-to” lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn’t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.

9. Write one new blog post per day minimum. Not every post has to be a pillar, but you should work on getting those five pillars done at the same time as you keep your blog fresh with a daily news or short article style post. The important thing here is to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time so they feel that if they come back tomorrow they will likely find something new. This causes them to bookmark your site or subscribe to your blog feed.

You don’t have to produce one post per day all the time but it is important you do when your blog is brand new. Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down to a few per week instead. The first few months are critical so the more content you can produce at this time the better.

8. Use a proper domain name. If you are serious about blogging be serious about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need a easily rememberable domain name. People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that’s the offline world, you remember that place right?) so you need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL. Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you’ve done a good job!).

7. Start commenting on other blogs. Once you have your pillar articles and your daily fresh smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people’s blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.

Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commentor and always have something valuable to say then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.

6. Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts. A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger’s article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry – it’s sort of like your blog telling someone else’s blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.

This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important – it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will likely come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.

5. Encourage comments on your own blog. One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.

4. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival. A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival often enjoy a spike in new readers.

To find the right blog carnival for your blog, do a search at blogcarnival.com.

3. Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com. To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it’s so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it’s worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!

2. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. This is another tip that doesn’t bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it’s worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have – your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.

How you benefit is through what is called your “Resource Box”. You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.

1. Write more pillar articles. Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I’ve listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won’t stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.

I hope you enjoyed my list of traffic tips. Everything listed above are techniques I’ve put into place myself for my blogs and have worked for me, however it’s certainly not a comprehensive list. There are many more things you can do. Finding readers is all about testing to see what works best for you and your audience and I have no doubt if you put your mind to it you will find a balance that works for you.

i originally posted this at khmerblogger.net, the reason i combine everything here because i don’t have much time to maintain the 3 blogs. if you visited khmerblogger.net and read already this post, you can skip it. i will continue writing about create a blog in the next few day.

for those that not yet read, i think this is something you should know about before you create a blog.

What is a Blog?

as i mentioned in my previous interview with Tharum for Global Voices Online,

a blog, when comparing to the old day, is a diary. So when something comes to your mind, you blog about it. What I like most about blog is that we share information: news, events, party or anything else with our friends as well as other bloggers.

if you don’t really know what a blog is, there’s a lot of free way to create a blog and it’s free, you don’t have to pay anything, just spend 5 minutes to register an account and you can have you own blog right away.

for the beginner, a lot of people go to Wordpress.com or Blogger.com

there’s nothing to worry about, follow the instructions, you will see how easy it is to get a blog.

Want to become a professional blogger?

after playing a while and if one day you want to do serious thing with your blog, there’s a good way to do it and later you will can start to earn some money from your blog.

1. pick up your own domain and hosting server,

it’s good to have an account on wordpress.com, but you will not be able to change any code or insert any ads on your blog, unless you have to pay some money to upgrade from the basic account but i don’t think ads can be accepted yet… you might just be able to change some css i believe.

you can put google adsense or other ads on your blogger account, but for two reasons that i would recommend you to get your own domain and self hosting server.

first, your account on blogger is not completely belong to you, it’s belong to google and there’s some terms and conditions of using that you have to respect and not to make any violations. get your own domain and self hosting, the blog is totally belong to you.

secondly, search engine prefer wordpress platform because it’s very optimized for the search engine. i have a lot of example on my blog http://khmerbird.com that with the same keyword, my blog has a very good position in the search result than other website that not using wordpress platform, a lot of webmaster today migrate their website to the wordpress platform.

2. choose your blog platform

as i mentioned above wordpress is the best blog platform on the planet, if you want to know more details, you can go to becomeablogger.com

get your own domain, buy a hosting server and install the wordpress platform, in a couple of minutes you will have your own website.

i will look around and find out more about how to register a domain and i would recommend you some local Cambodia company that provide that service in my next post.

i would recommend for the beginner to visit the website becomeablogger.com, that you can find everything you need to start a new blog.

i will write in my next post about which topic you should write about, and what kind of keyword you need for your blog etc…

let’s get your own blog now !
