let’s bring khmerbird to the new level

by khmerbird on January 22, 2010

I made an approach since June 2009 to the thesis theme. I heard everybody love it. I purchase a single license but since then I didn’t have time to try fully what Thesis can do.

I also do a survey should khmerbird switch to new theme? The result of the votes still insist me to keep the Mimbo with magazine style.

I used to visit dap-news.com and I would say I am a fan of this updated news around Cambodia and its cities.

But since they switched to the magazine style. I was lost and difficult to read the new contents.

I heard a few friends of mine also don’t like the new theme. It’s for the same reason: difficult to read and know what’s new what’s old. It’s because they are familiar with the classic theme: first in first out.

The fall of Phnom Penh

by khmerbird on January 21, 2010

Book’s Description

17 April 1975. The date sends a chill down the spine of most Cambodians. It was the start of a nightmare that was to continue for almost four years at the hands of the brutal Khmer Rouge.

Photographer Roland Neveu was one of the few foreigners who stayed behind when most of the press corps left the country as part of US evacuation operation Eagle Pull. The few 35-mm films which he shot that day are some of the only remaining images of that time. He was lucky enough to be able to take them out of the country after his forced sojourn in the French Embassy compound. This book takes you to Phnom Penh on that fateful day.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 (Bernama) — Leader Universal Holdings Bhd’s unit, Cambodian Transmission Ltd, today entered into a 25-year build-operate-transfer power transmission agreement with Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) to develop a 230 kilovolt power transmission system from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham for US$107 million.

EDC is Cambodia’s state-owned limited liability firm.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia, Leader said the project would be funded by internally generated funds and bank borrowings.

The project would be commissioned in three stages with the first being the construction of the Kampong Cham substation which was expected to be completed by July 2011.

The second would be the new North Phnom Penh substation and this was expected to be completed by March 2012.

“The completion of the entire project with the commissioning of the approximately 110km transmission line from North Phnom Penh substation to Kampong Cham substation, from whence the commercial operation date of the project commences.

Living in Cambodia on Less Than $500 a Month

by khmerbird on January 20, 2010

Getting around by tuk tuk. By tajai

Source: shelteroffshore

Other than Pol Pot, the spectacular ruins of Angkor Wot and, according to the Cambodians, Muay Thai style kick boxing, Cambodia doesn’t really hit the map for an awful lot of things – and let’s face it, in the case of Pol Pot maybe some things are certainly best forgotten.

But it is cheap – and there are very few places left in the world where you can live very cheaply, but if you’re prepared to live frugally it can be done here. Prices in the capital Phnom Penh have been rising but you can still live on $500 (roughly £340) a month in Cambodia.

Lost in Cambodia

by khmerbird on January 19, 2010

Source: Guardian

Why did a radical British professor become a cheer-leader for Pol Pot? And why was he murdered on the very day he’d met the brutal dictator? Andrew Anthony on the extraordinary life and death of Malcolm Caldwell

The name of Malcolm Caldwell is remembered now by very few people: some friends, family, colleagues, and students of utopian folly. In the 1970s, though, Caldwell was a major figure in protest politics. He was chair of CND for two years, a leading voice in the anti-Vietnam war campaign, a regular contributor to Peace News, and a stalwart supporter of liberation movements in the developing world. He spoke at meetings all over the country, wrote books and articles, and engaged in public spats with such celebrated opponents as Bernard Levin.

The name of Kaing Guek Eav is, arguably, known by even fewer people, at least outside of Cambodia. Instead it is by his revolutionary pseudonym “Duch” that Kaing is usually referred to in the press. Duch is the only man ever to stand trial in a UN-sanctioned court for the mass murder perpetrated by the Cambodian communist party, or the Khmer Rouge, in the late 1970s. His trial on charges of crimes against humanity, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, and homicide and torture concerning thousands of victims, drew to a close in November. Justice has taken more than 30 years, but a verdict and sentence are expected sometime in the next few weeks.

Dengue Fever Bring Cambodian Psych Rock to SOhO

by khmerbird on January 16, 2010

Source: Independent

This Thursday, acclaimed Cambodian psych rockers Dengue Fever make their highly anticipated return to SOhO.

To sing the praises of Dengue’s talent is easy. The six-piece masterfully blend worldly influences with the classic rock sounds of the ’60s and ’70s, creating songs that are as multitiered as they are groovable.

But to truly grasp the band’s genius, one must engage in a bit of a history lesson. In 2001, brothers Zac and Ethan Holtzman formed Dengue Fever after taking an interest in the pre-Pol Pot Cambodian pop music scene.

The tunes-discovered by Zac in San Francisco and Ethan during a trip to the country-drew directly from the 1960s American rock scene, with chord progressions and riffs that were remarkably similar to the music of Jimi Hendrix, or Pink Floyd, or The Ventures, sung completely in Khmer.

New film to raise HIV/AIDS awareness

by khmerbird on January 14, 2010

Source : Phnom Penh Post

AS the Cambodian film industry struggles with piracy and film closures, many local filmmakers have trouble finding their place in the industry.

This hasn’t stopped 28-year-old filmmaker Kao Seiha from starting production of a drama that tackles some of Cambodia’s more sensitive subjects.

Kao Seiha’s movie, High School Love’s Story, deals with the tale of a family whose mother abandons her HIV-positive husband.

“It mainly focuses on the situation of people living with HIV/AIDS, gay sex and the discrimination people living with HIV/AIDS endure,” said Kao Seiha at the ceremony marking the beginning of shooting.

Resolution for the new year 2010

I just found a song from Sunday production, sang by Khemarak sereymon that could be an example of the Resolution to all Cambodian people.

We drink too much these days, everywhere ! Please let this new year 2010 make a change. I read the report that stated the number of people that like to drink including woman have been increased dramatically.

I don’t say drinking is bad but please with moderation . I will let this music video make a projection to the reality. The song have been well written by a Khmer Sorin and remake by Sunday production. Sereymon also sang well on this song. He got talen, I wish one day I could make a photo with him.

I like this song, still listen to it many time these days. Please make en effort to stop drinking. We drink to have fun and with moderation,
