No Love Lost Among Khmers and Thais

When Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen appointed Thaksin Shinawatra as “economic adviser” to the Phnom Penh government, Thailand reacted strongly, canceling a 2001 memorandum of understanding on overlapping maritime boundaries. Diplomats from both countries have been recalled, and a Thai engineer working in Cambodia has been arrested and charged with spying. This is hardly just a “spat”—which is how the Thai media seems to treat the current standoff. But it also is not the most serious crisis in the history of Thai-Cambodian relations.

At times, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, can feel a bit hectic and maybe a little intimidating. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and while there learned various survival tactics in order to make visiting Phnom Penh slightly easier and more manageable.

Some of these survival tactics might even teach you a few lessons on how to be native in Cambodia. In any way, have an awesome time in Phnom Penh; a city that I consider to have a great mixture of entertainment, delicacies, humor, and great folks.

1. Oliver Kamm: Chomsky and Cambodia

This is a subject with a tortuous history. But you should read one item in today’s Observer. That newspaper published last month a long and illuminating article by Andrew Anthony about an obscure academic, Malcolm Caldwell, who had acted as a cheerleader for the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, where he was murdered. In the article, Andrew made a brief observation about the role of Noam Chomsky in 1970s polemic on the crimes of Pol Pot. I wrote a post about Andrew’s article, along with one on a couple of authors called George Hildebrand and Gareth Porter, whose whitewashing of the regime had served as one of the sources relied on by Chomsky.

2. The Prime Minister’s Anti-Corruption Declaration

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 650 The Mirror carried already last week a report about the extraordinary speech of the Prime Minister: “It Is Time to Stop; Military Officials Who Do Illegal Activities Are Not Fit to Work in the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces” – where he directly named several generals present, criticizing their unacceptable, corrupt behavior. During the present week, there were still positive responses in the press, including from sources not so close to the government.

No time to post since few days. Today it’s my weekend. I will make a summary of what is happening during this week in Cambodia.

PREAH VIHEAR, Cambodia (AFP) – Cambodian Premier Hun Sen visited a disputed border area with Thailand Saturday, angering the neighbouring nation amid an ongoing diplomatic spat.

Hun Sen began a tour of the area close to the ancient Preah Vihear temple at the centre of the land dispute by opening a school and giving supplies to villagers caught up in violence last year between the two countries’ troops.

“I have never asked for compensation. For me, it doesn’t matter about compensation,” said Hun Sen, referring to the destruction of a Cambodian market during a gunbattle last April.

“They (the Thais) have invaded us and look down on us.”

1. Airport Disaster Drill Held in Cambodia

As I mentioned yesterday about Airport on alert for crash drill, hundreds of participants took part in an emergency disaster drill Tuesday at the Phnom Pehn International Airport.

The simulated plane crash disaster drill required participants to focus on moving passengers from the crash site, fighting fires and treating injuries.

Senior government officials said that firefighters and rescuers learned a lot from the exercise.
